The Express: Paddling on the Winter Water

The creeks and harbors on the North Fork can be likened to hiking trails. Unrestricted by season, they connect explorers to the bays and Long Island Sound, offering a different perspective of the natural world by way of water. While for some paddle boarding may be reserved for the fair-weather days of summer, the active paddler feels a pull to the water of winter’s sometimes bleak days in search of an experience only this season can offer. Considering the utmost importance of safety, paddler Chris Dowling finds peace and serenity on his board even on the most frigid days.

A collective is a group of entities that share a common interest and are motivated to achieve a common objective. For seven young artists living and working on the East End, that objective is to bring varying mediums of art together in an approachable, unpretentious place, and share their work and ideas with the masses. The North Fork Art Collective on Front Street in Greenport is a pop-up working studio and gallery in a temporary space with a lasting goal.

Express Magazine: Maritime Festival: When There’s Fire on the Water

On the outskirts of Greenport, hidden behind the North Ferry’s pilings, Long Island Railroad, and East End Seaport Museum, is a dock often used by fishing and party boats. In a village teeming with maritime history, which is celebrated every September, the dock is also home to a moveable, floating National Historic Landmark – America’s first fireboat. Now a nonprofit museum operated by dedicated and passionate volunteers, the fireboat is preparing to celebrate another birthday in Greenport just in time for the Maritime Festival.
